OVERVIEW
About the Filmizo project
Filmizo is a complete streaming service, from a home page with rows of new releases, most watched, IMDb top titles and recommendations to the page of each movie and series with seasons, episodes, dubbing and subtitles. Users watch on the web, on mobile or on TV.
The project brings several separate systems together: the website, a content admin panel, an API for the apps and a video processor that turns raw files into adaptive streaming renditions and encrypts them.
Challenge
Video streaming is different from a normal website: heavy files must be converted to several qualities, playback must stay smooth on weak connections, content must not be directly downloadable or copyable, and the number of simultaneous devices per subscription must be controlled. Logging in on a TV, which has no keyboard, also has to be simple.
Solution
After upload, videos are queued, split into adaptive streaming segments in several qualities and encrypted; the decryption key is issued only by the API and only to an authorised user. Files are kept in S3-compatible storage and titles are searched instantly with a dedicated search engine. TV login uses a short code that the user confirms on their phone, and device limits follow the subscription.
